Democratic Participation is Your Right

Yet First Past the Post denies millions of us the power needed to advance our interests in parliament.

Democracy doesn’t discriminate — we should all have a representative who fights for what we believe in.

Demand Proportional Representation

Under First Past the Post (FPTP), Canada’s current single-member electoral system,

one party represents each riding.

That party has complete control over how issues are voted on in parliament on their constituents’ behalf.

This gives one party a monopoly on power.

This creates inequality by denying a majority of Canadians access to voting power in parliament.

Canadians are represented by their Members of Parliament (MPs) through

an MP’s ability to vote on legislation.

Individuals have access to voting power if their MP’s legislative activity matches their political interests.

This is how an MP acts on your behalf.

Anyone who voted for a candidate that became an MP has access to voting power. Everyone else does not.

Proportional Representation (PR) aims to achieve Democratic Equality by ensuring

multiple parties represent each riding.

This provides more Canadians with the voting power needed to participate in parliament through their party representative.

Almost all Canadians have access to power.

Every model of PR proposed for Canada includes local representation, multi-member ridings and voting power for almost everyone.
